Adobe Error 204 occurs when the Creative Cloud desktop app or installer fails to receive a response from Adobe download and authentication servers within the required time limit. This timeout halts app installations, updates, and cloud sync tasks. It typically happens when your network path drops fragmented packets due to an oversized Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) setting, an aggressive firewall drops return packets, or a VPN tunnel alters packet headers.
Fast Fix
Lower your network interface MTU size to 1450 (or 1400 on VPN connections) via Command Prompt or Terminal to prevent packet fragmentation. Temporarily disconnect from all VPNs, proxies, and custom DNS servers, restart your network adapter, and click Retry in the Creative Cloud desktop application.
Quick Status Snapshot
- Severity: Medium (blocks downloads and updates; installed apps and local files remain unaffected)
- Platforms: Windows 10, Windows 11, macOS
- Scope: Network transport layer, packet fragmentation thresholds, and TCP handshake persistence
- Action Required: Network adapter MTU optimization, firewall verification, or connection route reset
Resolution Steps
Step 1: Determine Your Optimal MTU Size
Before changing system settings, identify the maximum unfragmented packet size supported by your connection:
- Windows:
- Press
Win + R, typecmd, and press Enter. - Run the ping test:DOS
ping adobe.com -f -l 1472 - If you see “Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set,” lower the buffer size by 10 (e.g.,
1462,1452,1442) until the ping succeeds with 0% packet loss. - Add
28bytes (IP and ICMP header overhead) to that successful number. For example, if1442succeeds: $1442 + 28 = 1470$ is your maximum MTU.
- Press
- macOS:
- Open Terminal.
- Run:Bash
ping -D -s 1472 adobe.com - Lower the value by 10 until packets transmit without the “Message too long” error, then add
28to calculate your optimal MTU.
Step 2: Adjust Network Adapter MTU
- On Windows (Command Prompt):
- Right-click Start and open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- List your active interfaces:DOS
netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces - Set the MTU for your active adapter (e.g., “Wi-Fi” or “Ethernet”):DOS
netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wi-Fi" mtu=1450 store=persistent(Usemtu=1400if you are operating over a permanent VPN or PPPoE connection).
- On macOS (System Settings):
- Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Network.
- Select your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and click Details.
- In the sidebar, select Hardware.
- Change Configure from Automatically to Manually.
- Set MTU to Custom, enter
1450(or1400), and click OK.
Step 3: Flush DNS and Reset Network Sockets
- Windows: Run
ipconfig /flushdnsin Command Prompt. For deeper authentication socket cleanup, see [INTERNAL LINK: S01C01.38 – Error P207: How to Flush DNS for Adobe CC Authentication]. - macOS: Run
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponderin Terminal. - Relaunch Creative Cloud and resume your download.
Hard Stops and Escalation
Stop changing local network configurations and contact your network administrator or ISP if:
- Path MTU Discovery (PMTUD) is actively blocked upstream by your internet service provider’s routing equipment, causing continuous packet drops regardless of local adapter settings.
- The issue occurs on an enterprise-managed network where hardware firewalls or proxy gateways terminate connections to Adobe CDNs based on deep-packet content inspection policies that require administrative whitelisting.
