Why Adobe Genuine Software Integrity Service Disables Valid Subs

The Adobe Genuine Software Integrity Service (AGS) periodically inspects installed Adobe binaries, system digital certificates, and licensing tokens to prevent software piracy. When AGS flags a legitimate, fully paid subscription with warnings like “This non-genuine Adobe app will be disabled soon,” it is almost always caused by stale local licensing tokens, migration conflicts from hardware clones, blocked outbound authentication endpoints, or orphaned volume-license keys left behind by older installations.

Fast Fix

Sign out of the Creative Cloud Desktop application. Next, close all Adobe programs, end AGSService.exe in Task Manager or Activity Monitor, and delete the local cache folder at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\AdobeGCData (Windows) or /Library/Application Support/Adobe/AdobeGCData (macOS). Launch Creative Cloud Desktop and sign back in to pull a verified authorization token.

Quick Status Snapshot

  • Severity: High (launches a countdown that disables functional software access).
  • Scope: Machine-level licensing validation layer (AGSService.exe, AdobeGCClient.exe).
  • User vs. Admin: Requires local administrative access to clear protected program data folders and service caches.

What Causes False Positives on Paid Subscriptions?

AGS operates independently of the main Creative Cloud login loop. It does not simply check whether your Adobe account has an active credit card on file; it verifies the integrity of the local operating system environment.

                [False Positive Deactivation Warning]
  1. Hardware GUID Desynchronization: If you cloned an OS drive to a new computer, or restored using Apple Time Machine, your machine’s unique hardware identifier changes. The encrypted licensing token created on the old motherboard no longer matches the local machine hash. AGS interprets this mismatch as an unauthorized clone. If you recently restored your system, review Fixing “Time Machine” Restores That Break Adobe Licensing.
  2. Network Filtering and Blocked Validation Endpoints: AGS periodically pings genuine.adobe.com. If a local proxy, corporate firewall, or VPN drops these packets, the service enters a verification grace period. Once that grace period expires without a cryptographic handshake, the software defaults to an unverified state. Check Adobe Genuine Service vs. Third-Party Firewall Blocks to inspect firewall behavior.
  3. Orphaned Serialization Files (CS6 / CC Enterprise): If your machine previously held an old perpetual license (such as CS6) or an enterprise shared-device package, outdated .V7 or .SLStore registration keys may still reside on the drive. When AGS crawls local directories, it evaluates these legacy keys instead of the active named-user cloud subscription.
  4. Architectural Translation Layers (ARM Workstations): When running under x64 emulation layers on modern ARM-based processors, cryptographic signature calls occasionally fail to return expected values to the integrity daemon. For ARM-specific instances, see Why “Adobe Genuine Service” Flags Valid ARM Installations.

Resolution Steps

Step 1: Clear the Stale Integrity Token Cache

Clearing the cached validation profile forces AGS to rebuild its verification manifest directly against your current Adobe account status.

On Windows:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Locate and end AGSService.exe and AdobeGCClient.exe.
  3. Press Win + R, paste the following path, and press Enter:
C:\ProgramData\Adobe(Note: ProgramData is a hidden folder by default. Enable “Hidden items” in File Explorer view options if needed).
  4. Locate the folder named AdobeGCData. Delete it entirely.
  5. Launch Creative Cloud Desktop, click your profile avatar, and ensure your paid account is connected.

On macOS:

  1. Open Activity Monitor, search for AGSService, and click Force Quit.
  2. Open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G, and navigate to:
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/
  3. Locate and delete the AdobeGCData directory.
  4. Restart your Mac and launch an Adobe application to prompt a clean verification pass.

Step 2: Clear Corrupted Licensing Credential Storage

If legacy tokens remain in the primary Adobe session store, reset your local identity state:

  1. Sign out of Creative Cloud Desktop.
  2. Clear the secure session credentials using the procedures detailed in How to Reset the OOBE Cache to Fix UI Glitches.
  3. Sign back into the Creative Cloud app to re-populate the credential store with current subscription data.

Step 3: Remove Outdated Perpetual Licensing Remains

If an old serial-number installation is corrupting the scan:

  1. On Windows, navigate to:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\SLCache(On macOS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/SLCache)
  2. Delete files inside SLCache. (Do not modify the folder itself).
  3. Open an installed app like Photoshop; it will rebind to the active Creative Cloud user profile instead of the legacy serial file.

Hard Stops and Enterprise Escalation

  • Do not install third-party “genuine patchers” or registry workarounds. These tools modify local DLLs, which immediately trips real cryptographic integrity alarms, triggering an endless repair loop (see Resolving the ‘Adobe Genuine Service’ Reinstall Loop).
  • Enterprise Accounts: If you are signed in via an enterprise Federated ID or Enterprise ID and see this warning, contact your IT administrator. The system profile may have been provisioned with an expired feature package or revoked through the Adobe Admin Console, causing local verification engines to flag the machine.
