Adobe Photo Downloader (apd.exe, integrated with Adobe Bridge) automatically launches when you connect an external storage device, such as an SD card, external SSD, or camera. It intercepts drive mount events to prompt you to import photos or video clips into an Adobe catalog. This behavior interrupts your workflow and causes system delays when mounting high-capacity drives. You can disable this automatic launch through Windows AutoPlay settings, macOS device handlers, and internal Adobe Bridge preferences.
Fast Fix
In Windows, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > AutoPlay. Set both Removable drive and Memory card to Open folder to view files (File Explorer) or Take no action. In Adobe Bridge, open Preferences (Ctrl/Cmd + K) > Advanced, and uncheck When a Camera is Connected, Launch Adobe Photo Downloader.
Quick Status Snapshot
- Severity: Low (workflow nuisance, drive indexing delay, window focus theft).
- Target System: Operating system AutoPlay / Image Capture hardware insertion listeners.
- Privilege Level: Standard user account.
Why the Downloader Launches Automatically
Operating systems broadcast a global event across the hardware bus whenever removable media is plugged in. Background applications register listeners to handle these device-arrival signals:

[Adobe Photo Downloader Hijacks Screen]
- Operating System AutoPlay Hooks: During installation, Adobe Bridge registers
apd.exeas an approved media handler for removable storage volumes. - Background Camera Detectors: Adobe Bridge installs background monitors (
Adobe Device CentralorAdobe Bridge Startup) that continuously scan drive mount tables. - High-Speed External SSD Misidentification: Windows occasionally classifies high-speed external NVMe and Thunderbolt drives as removable media rather than fixed disks, causing the downloader to trigger on standard external scratch disks. If you use external drives for creative caches, see Using an External Thunderbolt 5 SSD as a Scratch Disk.

Step-by-Step Resolution
Step 1: Change AutoPlay Defaults in Windows
- Press
Win + Ito open Windows Settings. - Select Bluetooth & devices from the left navigation menu.
- Click on AutoPlay.
- Set the master toggle for Use AutoPlay for all media and devices to your preference:
- To silence all popups completely, toggle it Off.
- To keep AutoPlay active without launching Adobe, locate Removable drive and choose Open folder to view files (File Explorer) or Take no action.
- Locate Memory card and set it to Take no action.

Step 2: Adjust Device Handlers in macOS
On macOS, device insertion preferences are managed by Image Capture:
- Connect the SD card or camera to your Mac.
- Open Image Capture (via Spotlight or
/Applications). - Select the connected card or camera in the left sidebar.
- Click the small Options (…) icon or disclosure triangle in the bottom-left corner.
- Locate the dropdown menu labeled Connecting this [device] opens:.
- Change the selection from Adobe Photo Downloader or Adobe Bridge to No Application.
Step 3: Disable Launch Triggers in Adobe Bridge
Prevent Adobe Bridge from claiming camera and card connections internally:
- Open Adobe Bridge.
- Open preferences:
- Windows:
Edit > Preferences - macOS:
Bridge > Settings
- Windows:
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Uncheck When a Camera is Connected, Launch Adobe Photo Downloader.
- Click OK.
If Adobe Bridge lags while indexing previews on newly connected drives, consult Why “Bridge 2026” Performance Stutters on High-Res Previews.
Step 4: Remove the Background Startup Task
If the photo downloader continues to launch on startup, remove the startup entry:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager, then switch to the Startup apps tab. - Locate Adobe Bridge or Adobe Photo Downloader.
- Right-click the entry and select Disable.
Hard Stops
- Do not delete
apd.exedirectly from the Adobe installation directory. Deleting the binary manually can cause installation corruption flags when running future Adobe Bridge updates. Always disable its behavior through system AutoPlay settings or application preferences instead.
