The Adobe Genuine Service (AGS, including AGSService.exe and AdobeGCClient.exe) verifies that installed Adobe applications possess valid licensing certificates. Users and system administrators often try to suppress telemetry, performance overhead, or popups by blocking AGS using third-party firewalls like Little Snitch, LuLu, GlassWire, or hardware firewalls. However, blocking these packets creates unintended side effects: silent network drops cause infinite retry loops, 100% CPU thread lockups, and eventual software lockouts after local validation grace periods expire.
Fast Fix
Do not use firewall drop rules to block Adobe Genuine Service. In your third-party firewall, remove blocking rules for
AGSService.exeandAdobeGCClient.exe, and ensure outbound HTTPS (Port 443) access is allowed togenuine.adobe.com. If you are seeing false-positive piracy alerts on an active paid subscription, resolve the issue by clearing the local licensing cache instead of blocking network traffic.
Quick Status Snapshot
- Severity: High (results in CPU spikes, background battery drain, and eventual app deactivation).
- Mechanism: Outbound TCP SYN packet dropping vs. TCP Reject signaling.
- Target Processes:
AGSService.exe,AdobeGCClient.exe.
The Technical Fallout of Firewall Blocks
Many firewalls default to dropping outbound packets silently without sending a response (DROP behavior), rather than actively rejecting them (REJECT behavior). This creates significant issues for Adobe background integrity daemons:

[Silent Packet Drop] [Active Connection Reset]
- OS waits for TCP timeout - Firewall returns TCP RST
- Socket left open in SYN_SENT - Socket closes immediately
- AGS retries every 3–5 seconds - Daemon pauses until next cycle

[RUNAWAY CPU / DISK USAGE]

[Grace Period Counter Runs Down] ──► [APP GETS DISABLED]
- The TCP Timeout Loop: When a firewall silently drops a connection, the operating system holds the socket in a
SYN_SENTstate until it times out. AGS interprets this silent drop as an unstable network connection and immediately spawns a new thread to retry. This rapid cycle can pin an entire CPU core at 100%. If you are already experiencing this issue, see Why Adobe GC Client (Genuine Check) Causes Performance Lag. - Grace Period Expiration: Adobe licensing uses an offline grace period counter. AGS is designed to operate offline temporarily, but if it fails to complete a cryptographic handshake after an extended period, it treats the software as unverified. This locks you out of your applications with “non-genuine” alerts, even on active paid plans (see Why Adobe Genuine Software Integrity Service Disables Valid Subs).

How to Properly Configure Firewall Environments
Step 1: Remove Drop Rules for Validation Endpoints
If your security suite must manage network traffic, configure it to allow necessary licensing checks to complete rather than severing them mid-stream.
Allow outbound TCP traffic on Port 443 for the following executables:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\AdobeGCClient\AdobeGCClient.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\AdobeGCClient\AGSService.exe- (macOS)
/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AdobeGCClient/AGSService
Ensure that the firewall allows outbound communication to these primary integrity hosts:
genuine.adobe.com
prod.adobegenuine.com
licenses.adobe.com
To properly configure exclusions across enterprise tools without leaving security gaps, refer to How to Whitelist Adobe Background Processes in Security Software.
Step 2: Use TCP Reset (REJECT) Instead of DROP
If you are an IT administrator operating an enterprise network boundary that must restrict traffic to specific endpoints:
- Configure your firewall to return an immediate TCP RST (Reset) packet or ICMP Port Unreachable message instead of silently dropping packets.
- When
AdobeGCClientreceives an immediate TCP Reset, it terminates its network thread and enters an idle state until the next scheduled interval, avoiding CPU-heavy retry loops.
Step 3: Remove Manual Hosts File Redirects
Users often try to block AGS by redirecting Adobe domains to 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0 in the system hosts file. This causes local loopback port collisions and triggers errors across other Creative Cloud services.
- Open your
hostsfile:- Windows:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts - macOS:
/etc/hosts
- Windows:
- Remove any lines referencing:
adobe.comadobegenuine.comadobe.io
- Save the file with administrative privileges and flush your DNS cache.
Hard Stops and Service Removal
If you have a legitimate, active subscription and AGS has entered an unrecoverable crash loop due to firewall rules or corrupted service scripts, do not attempt to patch the executable files.
- If the service continuously reinstalls itself or throws persistent installation errors, follow the verified removal and repair procedure in Resolving the ‘Adobe Genuine Service’ Reinstall Loop.
