Why Your Adobe Libraries Won’t Sync (Metadata Conflict)

Creative Cloud Libraries synchronize design elements—such as vector shapes, color swatches, character styles, and brushes—between your local desktop apps and Adobe servers. When a library displays a yellow warning icon, flags a “Metadata Conflict,” or hangs on sync, the problem is rarely an internet outage. It occurs because the local background daemon (CCLibrarian) encountered mismatched database attributes, duplicate element IDs, or unsupported character schemas between your local SQLite database and the cloud manifest.

Fast Fix

Log in to assets.adobe.com/libraries in a web browser. Locate the library showing the conflict, find the asset with the red or yellow sync badge, and rename or duplicate it online. Next, in your desktop app (such as Photoshop or Illustrator), click the three dots (…) in the CC Libraries panel and select Refresh.

Quick Status Snapshot

  • Severity: Medium (blocks additions, updates, and cross-application asset sharing).
  • Target Layer: Local SQLite database records, JSON/XML element schemas, and CCLibrarian WebSocket bridge.
  • Scope: Affects specific libraries or individual asset entries across all connected CC applications.

What Causes a Library Metadata Conflict?

Unlike standard file synchronization, Creative Cloud Libraries are transactional databases. When you save an asset to a library, CCLibrarian creates a structured JSON metadata block describing its color profile, raster thumbnail, layer relationships, and modified timestamp.

      - Unsupported character in name - CCLibrarian halts synchronization
      - Corrupt local SQLite entry - Library panel displays warning badge

The sync pipeline stalls for three specific reasons:

  1. Timestamp Collisions Across Devices: If you edit an asset on a laptop while offline and modify the same library from a desktop workstation, both clients submit competing modification stamps with identical version numbers.
  2. Schema and Character Violations: Asset names containing trailing spaces, emoji characters, or non-standard Unicode characters can fail XML/JSON schema validation during the cloud handoff.
  3. Local Database Corruption: If an Adobe app closes unexpectedly while writing to the local library cache, the local SQLite database becomes out of sync with the cloud manifest.

If your entire library panel shows a connection failure rather than a metadata badge, see Fixing ‘Communication with the server failed’ in CCLibrary.

Step-by-Step Resolution

Step 1: Resolve the Conflict on the Adobe Web Portal

The cloud version of your library is the authoritative source. Correcting the conflicting record online forces the desktop client to accept the resolved state:

  1. Open a web browser and go to https://assets.adobe.com/libraries.
  2. Sign in with your Adobe ID and open the affected library.
  3. Look for items labeled “Conflicted Copy” or flagged with an alert badge.
  4. If a duplicate exists, verify which version is correct, delete the older copy, and rename the remaining asset to a simple alphanumeric name (e.g., Brand_Logo_Primary).
  5. Return to your desktop app, open the Libraries panel, click the menu icon, and choose Reload Library.

Step 2: Clear the Local Library Cache Database

If the web portal appears clean but your desktop app continues to report a metadata mismatch, your local SQLite cache is corrupted:

  1. Close all open Adobe applications.
  2. Open Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (macOS).
  3. End CCLibrarian and CCLibrary (see CCLibrarian: Fixing Library Sync Issues in the Background).
  4. Navigate to your local library cache:
    • Windows: %AppData%\Adobe\Creative Cloud Libraries\libs
    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Creative Cloud Libraries/libs
  5. Delete the contents inside the libs folder.
  6. Relaunch Photoshop or Illustrator. The local daemon will automatically re-download the clean manifest from the cloud.

Step 3: Remove Metadata Inconsistencies on Retired Synced Folders

If your library assets reference files that previously lived in the retired Creative Cloud Files folder, metadata mismatches can cascade into your library panels. To clear lingering sync hooks on local folders, follow Fixing ‘Inconsistent Local Metadata’ After Cloud Sync Removal.

Hard Stops

  • Do not delete an entire shared Team Library to fix a metadata conflict on a single asset. Doing so permanently unlinks assets for all collaborators across your organization. Always isolate and repair the individual element on the web portal first.
