Syncing Custom Brushes and Patterns Without the Cloud Sync Folder

Prior to the discontinuation of Creative Cloud Synced Files, digital artists and designers frequently synchronized custom Photoshop brushes (.abr) and patterns (.pat) across multiple machines by dropping preset files into the shared Creative Cloud Files folder. Now that local file synchronization has ended, placing presets into local folders will not transfer them to your other computers. You can maintain identical brush engines and pattern libraries across your devices by embedding them directly into Creative Cloud Libraries, exporting packaged presets to an alternative mirrored cloud drive, or using directory symlinks.

Fast Fix

In Photoshop, open the Brushes panel (Window > Brushes), right-click your custom brush group, and select Add to Library. Open the Libraries panel (Window > Libraries) and select your shared design library. On your second machine, open the Libraries panel; your brushes and patterns will be instantly available for painting without manual file copying.

Quick Status Snapshot

  • Purpose: Sharing custom Photoshop brushes, patterns, and tool presets across multiple workstations.
  • Target Layer: Photoshop Presets engine (.abr, .pat), Creative Cloud Libraries, and local AppData/Preferences directories.
  • Devices Supported: Windows PCs, macOS workstations, iPad (Photoshop for iPad and Adobe Fresco).

Modern Preset Sharing Architectures

Brushes and patterns do not require traditional file-level hard drive synchronization. Adobe software supports three reliable workflows for keeping presets updated across rigs:

[Custom Brushes & Patterns Created]
                 │
├── Option 1: Creative Cloud Libraries ──► Live Sync (Desktop & iPad)
                 │ (Best for daily painting)
                 │
├── Option 2: Mirrored Cloud Directory ──► Exported .abr / .pat packages
                 │ (Best for bulk archives)
                 │
└── Option 3: Directory Symlinks ───────► Live preference mirroring
                                                            (Advanced multi-PC setup)
  1. Creative Cloud Libraries (Asset Embedding): Brushes and patterns dragged into a CC Library are stored within Adobe’s transactional cloud database. They are available instantly across Photoshop, Illustrator, Fresco, and Photoshop on iPad.
  2. Packaged Preset Files on Mirrored Drives: Saving consolidated .abr or .pat files to an external cloud provider (such as Google Drive or Dropbox set to local mirroring) allows you to import identical sets on demand (see Moving Adobe Creative Cloud Files to Google Drive (Best Practices)).
  3. OS-Level Symlinks: Production artists who modify dozens of presets daily can link their entire local settings directory directly across machines (see Syncing Adobe Settings Across Multiple Machines Without Cloud Sync).

Step-by-Step Configuration

Method 1: The Creative Cloud Libraries Workflow (Recommended)

This method keeps your presets accessible without manually moving files:

  1. Open Photoshop.
  2. Open both the Brushes panel (Window > Brushes) and the Libraries panel (Window > Libraries).
  3. In the Libraries panel, select or create a library (e.g., Studio_Brushes_2026).
  4. Select the custom brush or brush group you want to sync.
  5. Drag and drop the brush directly from the Brushes panel into the Libraries panel.
  6. To add a custom pattern, open the Patterns panel (Window > Patterns) and drag the pattern swatch into the same library.
  7. Launch Photoshop on your second machine, open the Libraries panel, and double-click the brush. It will immediately load into your active tool slots.

Method 2: Manual Package Export to Mirrored Storage

If you have extensive libraries with thousands of brushes:

  1. In the Brushes panel, select the custom folders you want to back up.
  2. Click the panel menu (hamburger icon) in the upper right.
  3. Select Export Selected Brushes.
  4. Save the .abr package directly into your mirrored cloud drive (e.g., G:\My Drive\Design_Assets\Brushes\).
  5. For patterns, go to Window > Patterns, open the panel menu, and select Export Selected Patterns to create a .pat file.
  6. On your secondary computer, double-click the exported .abr or .pat file. Photoshop will automatically import the presets into your local installation.

Method 3: Fixing Stalled Library Syncing

If presets added to your CC Libraries fail to appear on your other machines, the background sync broker is likely stalled. Review Why Your Adobe Libraries Won’t Sync (Metadata Conflict) to clear conflicted database entries.

Hard Stops

  • Do not place loose .abr or .pat files into the core application directories (such as C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop\Presets\). Modern operating systems protect these directories with elevated user access controls. Storing custom assets here risks losing them whenever Photoshop installs a minor or major version update. Always store master presets in your user profile directory or within CC Libraries.
