When Creative Cloud Synced Files was retired, local asset directories were decoupled from cloud synchronization. InDesign documents that referenced assets inside the retired Creative Cloud Files folder will display missing link alerts (red question mark badges) in the Links panel. Relinking hundreds of placed graphics one by one is impractical. By standardizing your local server paths, mapping identical network shares, and leveraging InDesign’s batch-relinking features, you can re-establish link integrity across large documents and multi-document books in a few steps.
Fast Fix
Open your InDesign document, open the Links panel (Window > Links), select all missing links using
Ctrl + A(Windows) orCmd + A(macOS), click the panel menu, and select Relink to Folder. Point InDesign to the new asset location on your local server or mapped drive. InDesign will automatically scan subfolders and batch-relink every matching file.
Quick Status Snapshot
- Severity: High (missing links cause low-resolution proxy printing and block high-res PDF exports).
- Target Layer: InDesign link database, absolute file paths, and local server UNC/mount points.
- Scope: Any
.inddlayout or.indbbook created prior to moving assets off cloud sync paths.
Understanding InDesign Path Storage
InDesign documents track placed assets using two path formats simultaneously: an absolute path and a relative path.

└── Relative Path: ..\Projects\Photo.jpg

[Path Mismatch Triggers Missing Link Badge (?)]
- The Absolute Path Break: If you move your creative assets to an on-premises NAS, SAN, or shared server, the absolute path breaks because the drive root changes (e.g., from
C:\Users\<Name>\Creative Cloud Files\to\\StudioServer\Production\or/Volumes/Production/). - Cross-Platform Inconsistencies: If team members use both Windows and macOS, linking directly to a Windows drive letter (e.g.,
Z:\) will break when opened on a Mac (which mounts volumes under/Volumes/ShareName/). Establishing a standardized network mount structure is critical before relinking.
If you have not yet mapped your studio server shares consistently across your editing fleet, review How to Map a Network Drive for Adobe Asset Management.

If you are migrating legacy assets across an enterprise team with hundreds of shared documents, you can also automate path reassignment using How to Use the Adobe Asset Migration Tool (2026 Version).
Step-by-Step Batch Relinking Procedure
Step 1: Stage Assets on the Local Server
Before touching InDesign:
- Ensure the entire asset directory structure from your legacy sync path is fully copied to the destination server.
- Ensure file names, capitalization, and folder structures remain identical. InDesign uses case-sensitive matching when resolving links on network shares.
Step 2: Use “Relink to Folder” in InDesign
- Open the affected
.indddocument in InDesign. - Open the Links panel by going to Window > Links.
- Notice the red question marks indicating missing files.
- Click the first missing link, hold
Shift, and click the last missing link in the list to select all of them. - Click the Links panel menu (the three horizontal bars in the upper-right corner) and select Relink to Folder.

│ (?) Product_Shot.psd Missing │

│ Selected: 3 items [Panel Menu] ──► [ Relink to Folder ]│ <--- SELECT THIS
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
- In the file browser, navigate to the new asset location on your local server or mapped network drive.
- Ensure the checkbox for Search for Missing Links in This Folder is checked.
- Click Select Folder (Windows) or Choose (macOS).
- InDesign will parse the folder, match the file names, and clear the missing link indicators across the document.
Step 3: Handling Subfolder Structures
If your assets are stored across categorized subdirectories (e.g., /Images/, /Vectors/, /Logos/):
- In the Relink to Folder dialog, check Match same filename but this extension if you converted any assets (such as replacing
.tifwith.psd). - If assets live in nested folders, point InDesign to the top-level root folder on the server. InDesign will automatically search subdirectories recursively to find matches.
Advanced Relinking for Multi-Document Books (.indb)
If you manage multi-document books consisting of dozens of chapters:
- Open the
.indbBook panel. - Click the book panel menu and select Preflight Book.
- Identify chapters with missing link flags.
- Instead of opening each chapter manually, open the first document, execute the Relink to Folder procedure, and choose Save All in the book panel. InDesign updates the shared path cache across the entire book.
Hard Stops
- Do not package the document while links are missing. Using File > Package while links show missing indicators will copy low-resolution 72 dpi screen proxies into the package folder, permanently disconnecting your layout from high-resolution print assets.
- Avoid mixing UNC paths and drive letters on Windows. If one user relinks files using
\\Server\Share\Assets\and another relinks usingZ:\Assets\, InDesign may force a full relinking cycle every time a different user opens the document. Standardize on mapped drive letters across all Windows workstations.
