The OOBE (Out-of-Box Experience) cache stores local authentication records, application entitlements, account licensing states, and user interface definitions for Adobe Creative Cloud. When this cache becomes damaged, often after an ungraceful shutdown, an interrupted update, or a password change, it causes severe interface bugs. These manifest as blank white or gray windows, infinite loading spinners, repetitive sign-in prompts, or errors stating that “Creative Cloud is missing or damaged.” Resetting the OOBE cache clears these corrupted temporary records and forces Adobe applications to pull a fresh, clean configuration directly from identity servers.
Fast Fix
Close all Adobe apps. In Task Manager or Activity Monitor, kill all background tasks named Creative Cloud, Adobe Desktop Service, and CoreSync. Press
Win + R, paste%LocalAppData%\Adobe\OOBE, and hit Enter. Rename theOOBEfolder toOOBE_old(on macOS:~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE). Reopen Creative Cloud Desktop and sign in to generate a fresh cache.
Quick Status Snapshot
- Severity: High for user interface functionality; Zero for local user files and project data.
- Target Layer: Local account authentication, licensing handshake cache, and UI manifests.
- Privilege Level: Standard user account (administrative permissions not required).
What Does the OOBE Cache Actually Do?
The OOBE directory serves as the local session database for the Adobe client architecture. It bridges your local machine’s identity to the remote cloud authorization servers.

[Local Token Store: opm.db] [UI Shell Manifests]
- Stores active login state - Renders Apps & Files tabs
- Authorizes CC Desktop access - Holds layout caches
When local files within OOBE become corrupt, specifically opm.db (the local authorization token database), the UI engine fails to resolve local states against incoming web responses. This mismatch causes the user interface to hang indefinitely on a loading spinner or fail to render entirely.
If your UI failure presents as an explicit error code during app installation rather than an interface glitch, review Error 136: Internal Error – Manual Cleanup of OOBE Folders.

If you are diagnosing login loops on Snapdragon or other ARM-based hardware, consult How to Reset the “OOBE” Folder to Fix Login Loops on ARM.
Step-by-Step Reset Procedure
Step 1: Fully Terminate the Adobe Background Process Tree
You cannot reset the cache while running Adobe processes hold open read/write locks on the files.
On Windows:
- Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager.
- Find and terminate the following processes if running:
Creative Cloud Desktop.exeAdobe Desktop Service.exeCCXProcess.exeCoreSync.exeAdobe IPC Broker.exe
On macOS:
- Open Activity Monitor.
- Search for and Force Quit:
Creative CloudAdobe Desktop ServiceCCXProcessCoreSync
Step 2: Clear or Rename the OOBE Directory
On Windows:
- Press
Win + Rto open the Run dialog. - Paste the following path exactly and click OK:
%LocalAppData%\Adobe - Locate the folder named OOBE.
- Right-click the folder and rename it to OOBE_old.
(Renaming the folder instead of deleting it preserves a rollback backup if needed).

└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
On macOS:
- Click the desktop to focus Finder.
- Press
Cmd + Shift + Gto open the Go to Folder dialog. - Paste the following path:
~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE - Move the contents of the
OOBEfolder to the Trash, or rename theOOBEparent folder toOOBE_old.
Step 3: Delete the Core Authentication Database File
If you only want to clear authentication loops without wiping the entire interface cache:
- Open the
OOBEfolder directly. - Locate the single file named
opm.db. - Delete
opm.db. - When you relaunch an Adobe program, it will prompt you to enter your Adobe ID credentials cleanly, regenerating
opm.dbwithout altering other layout settings.
Step 4: Rebuild the Cache
- Launch the Creative Cloud Desktop application.
- The initial launch may take 30 to 60 seconds longer than normal as it rebuilds the cache structure.
- Enter your Adobe ID and password when prompted.
- Once authenticated, verify that the Apps panel displays your correct subscription entitlements.
Hard Stops and Safety Boundaries
- Project Files Are Safe: Resetting OOBE has zero effect on your
.prproj,.psd,.aep, or local asset files. It only affects session cache and authentication data. - If resetting OOBE does not clear persistent UI freezing, deeper system-level AppData corruption is likely present. Do not manually delete registry hives; instead, follow the complete cleanup protocol in Cleaning Hidden Appdata/Local/Adobe Folders for a Fresh Start.
